Transportation Frequently Asked Questions

How are bus routes and stops determined?

The division utilizes a computer system to develop bus routes and bus stops taking in account traffic safety issues and the residences of students attending Isle of Wight County Schools. Whenever possible, bus stops will placed at a street corner. Bus stops are designed to be no more than 2/10 (.2) miles from a student's home, per School Board policy.

Will we have the same bus stop every year?

Bus routes and stops may change from year to year to accommodate changes of address, new enrollments, and school assignments. While bus stop locations will remain relatively constant, bus numbers and stop times will change whenever a route is adjusted.

When will I be notified about my bus stop?

The Transportation Department will share all bus route and bus stop information with each individual school during the final week before the beginning of the school year.  Schools will generally share this information and make it available to parents/guardians during Open House dates.  Please remember that all pickup times are approximate and can fluctuate during the first few weeks of school. We recommend students arrive at their bus stops at least 10 minutes prior to the posted pickup time.

Can I have my bus or bus stop changed?

Students are assigned to buses based on their home address. To ensure buses are not loaded above capacity, parents must contact their student's school to request a bus pass for alternate pickup and drop off locations such as a daycare facility or relative's home.

How will I know if the bus is running late?

Due to traffic, weather, and other unforeseen circumstances, all pickup and drop off times can vary throughout the school year. In the event that a bus will delayed beyond 10-15 minutes from its normal route times, the division will notify parents via the Connect 5 automated call system. Parents should update their personal accounts to ensure contact information is current and correct.
