Virginia LEARNS Workgroup Seeks Public Comment on School Reopening & Recovery

The Virginia LEARNS (Leading, Engaging, Assessing, Recovering, Nurturing and Succeeding) workgroup, was created by Dr. James Lane, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and consists of educators, mental health professionals, and numerous representatives of other stakeholder groups to assess the needs of students and support Virginia school divisions as they implement Governor Ralph Northam's directive to provide in-person instruction options for students by March 15.

The Workgroup has been charged with identifying and compiling practices and resources related to instruction and remediation strategies, equitable access to services, assessment strategies, and the well-being of students and staff.

The workgroup intends to deliver its final product in the spring. It is soliciting feedback on the following until March 1, 2021:

1. Suggestions or recommendations of practices that have worked well over the last year.
2. Concerns about practices that have not worked well over the last year, and suggestions for addressing them.
3. Types of resources and supports school divisions, parents and communities most need.
4. Best practices in remediating students and creative schedules to support these efforts.

Responses provided below will be shared with the workgroup at their March meeting.
