Two SHS JROTC Cadets Place in Regional Air Rifle Competition

Two marksman from the Smithfield High School JROTC Rifle Team recently traveled to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Competition Center complex in Port Clinton, Ohio to compete in the Army JROTC Air Rifle Northeast Regional Championships at Camp Perry. Junior Nymiar Towns and Senior Summer Fruchey placed in the top 40 in the region and top 150 in the nation. Summer placed 23rd and Nymiar placed 40th in the region. Summer placed 103rd and Nymiar placed 139thin the nation out of over 1600 entries, putting them in the top 7% and 9% respectively of Army JROTC sporter marksmen in the nation. During the two-day competition (60 shots each day), both cadets earned their gold Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) pins by shooting 515 or over out of a possible 600 points on either day. The SHS Army JROTC Rifle team has been the top AJROTC team in Virginia since it began in the 2019-2020 school year. “I am very proud of these cadets. They both shot their personal bests and both shot over 1000 on the combined two day competition. I could not be prouder”, said Coach LTC (Ret) Peter Badoian.
