With nearly 30 years in public education, Tanyeka Thornton has been selected as the new Assistant Principal of Hardy Elementary School. Her extensive background includes roles as a teacher, instructional specialist, principal, and most recently, Lead Assistant Principal at Franklin High School. Thornton is widely respected for her instructional leadership, use of data to inform teaching practices, and efforts to cultivate a positive and inclusive school culture. In 2022, she was recognized as District Assistant Principal of the Year. She holds advanced degrees in Educational Leadership and Urban Education, as well as multiple Virginia licenses. Thornton shared her enthusiasm about joining the Hardy team and emphasized her desire to build strong, supportive relationships with students, staff, and families to ensure every child’s success.
Sara Baughman, a proud graduate of IWCS, has been named the new Assistant Principal of Georgie D. Tyler Middle School (GTMS). Over the past twelve years, Baughman has served the division in various roles, including teacher, administrative aide, and most recently, Instructional Coach at GTMS. In her current role, she has collaborated with educators to implement data-driven instructional strategies and support professional development. Baughman is especially known for her advocacy for students with special needs, commitment to equity, and dedication to empowering staff. She holds advanced degrees in Educational Leadership, Teaching, and Psychology, along with Virginia licensure in Administration and Supervision PreK–12 and Elementary Education PreK–6. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and her commitment to inspiring hope and growth in every student she serves.
Matt Summitt has been appointed Assistant Principal of Smithfield Middle School. He has served as Assistant Principal at Hardy Elementary School since 2002, where he has been a trusted leader and advocate for students and staff. Prior to his administrative role, he taught music at Carrollton Elementary School and previously served as a teacher at Achievable Dream Academy in Newport News. Summitt also served four years in the United States Navy before pursuing his passion for education. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Christopher Newport University and a Bachelor of Arts in U.S. History from Arizona State University. He later earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech. Summitt brings a wealth of experience, strong instructional insight, and a student-centered mindset to his new leadership role at Smithfield Middle School.
In support of its continued commitment to strong fiscal stewardship, IWCS has welcomed Connie Eddins as an Accountant within the division. Eddins brings over 17 years of experience in financial management, having served as a Senior Accountant and Cost Analyst in both government and private sectors. She has led accounting teams, managed complex financial reports, conducted audits, and overseen budget development and grant reporting. Eddins holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Saint Leo University and is a member of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. She is known for her focus on improving efficiency, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring financial transparency. Her expertise will enhance IWCS’s business operations and reinforce its commitment to responsibly managing public funds.
