Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to submit a Free and Reduced Price Meal Application?
    • Households must submit a new application each school year in order to qualify for free and reduced price meal benefits.  Applications can be submitted directly and securely to the Child Nutrition Office by going to https://www.lunchapplication.com/ and completing the information in each form.  You may receive a letter in the mail notifying you that your student(s) have already been approved for free or reduced price meals based on SNAP, TANF, or other benefits that you already receive.

  • I filled out an application for free and reduced price meals earlier this year and did not qualify. Now my hours have been cut at work, can I reapply?
    • Yes; you may reapply any time your income or household size changes.  Once your application is approved, the status remains in place through the remainder of the current school year.

  • How much does a school lunch and breakfast cost?
    • 2023-2024 School meal prices will be published in the near future.  If your new free and reduced price meal application is approved, then the cost of both breakfast and lunch will be waived for your student.

  • Are a la carte items for sale in the lunch line?
    • Yes; students will be able to purchase food items in addition to the standard breakfast and lunch entrees.  Students will need to maintain a positive account balance in order to purchase a la carte items.

  • What are the payment options?
    • We encourage parents to go online to www.k12paymentcenter.com.  The online account is free to setup and can be used to monitor your child's lunch account activity, set automatic payments, and create low balance reminders so your student's lunch account never gets overdrawn.  A setup guide can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
    • K12PaymentCenter.com accepts major credit card, bank cards and electronic checks. A small convenience is assessed with each prepayment.
    • Cash and personal checks are also accepted in the lunch line and the entire payment will be applied to the individual lunch account.  Please check with your individual school's office to make sure your checks are payable to the correct name.

  • Can I be refunded the money left on my student's lunch account?
    • Yes; lunch account balances can be refunded via mailed check by emailing the following information to Sandra Carr at [email protected]: Student Full Name, School Name, Mailing Address, and Full Name of the Payee.  A confirmation email will be sent back to verify all information matches school records.

  • What happens if my student's lunch account runs out of money and begins to accrue meal debt?
    • Under Virginia Law, every student has to be offered a meal regardless of their ability to pay.  Students that choose to participate in the school meal program will be charged accordingly for each meal served.
    • Meal debt balances will be communicated to households via automated phone call, email, standard mail, or other methods depending on the balance.  It is National School Lunch Program policy to deal directly with parents or guardians regarding any meal debt.
    • Collection efforts will be made for those accounts which are not responsive to this communication.
    • A la carte items such as snacks are not allowed to be charged towards meal debt.
    • If you have concerns about your student's lunch account activity please contact Support Services at 757-357-4393 or email [email protected].

  • My student has a food allergy.  What do I need to do next?
    • Contact your doctor and have the medical documentation submitted to the school nurse.  The Child Nutrition Department will receive this information and make the proper notations on the student's lunch account.
    • To further protect our student's, our school kitchens are Nut-Free.
