VASN Conference 2023 — VASN Fall Conference 2023.

LaDona Roddy won the VASN School Administrator of the Year Award 2023. — Join us in congratulating the IWCS School Health Team Supervisor, LaDona Roddy, for receiving the 2023 School Nurse Administrator of the Year award for VASN. She will go on to represent IWCS and the Commonwealth of Virginia at the National School Nurse Conference in Chicago in July 2024.

Nurse Futrell presents poster presentation bringing awareness to Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Project ADAM. — Nurse Futrell submitted a poster presentation explaining sudden cardiac arrest and bringing awareness to Project ADAM. She formed a team at Windsor Elementary School this past spring and was the first school in the Commonwealth of Virginia to be acknowledged as a Heart Safe school. She won the poster presentation competition and was awarded a 1 year membership to VASN. IWCS now has 3 schools that are Heart Safe with Project ADAM.

Project ADAM celebration at WES — Children's Hospital of Richmond Project ADAM recognized Windsor Elementary School as a Heart Safe School on April 20, 2023. Windsor Elementary was the first school in the Commonwealth of Virginia to achieve this. Thank you Nurse Futrell and your code team for helping to promote a Heart Safe environment for all students, visitors, faculty and staff.

Isle of Wight County Schools recognizes the importance of the health and welfare of all students. The student health program was established to address the health and safety concerns that may arise during school hours.

The program is staffed by a Nursing Supervisor, ten licensed, full-time nurses in each school and six clinic assistants.

The school nurse is responsible for providing care and serving as a medical resource and health consultant for students, parents, and staff. The nurse reviews admission information, implements specialized health care plans, provides first aid, manages medications, counsels students regarding health issues, provides up-to-date training to faculty, performs annual screenings, teaches health related topics, and serves as a vital link between parents and health care providers.
