I am honored to serve as Superintendent of a school division with such a strong foundation, proud traditions, and deep commitment to students, families, employees, and the community. Isle of Wight County Schools is a place where people care deeply about the success of every child, and I am excited about the work ahead as we continue building on the progress already taking place across our schools.
Our goal is clear: to ensure every student is prepared for success in school and in life. That means providing strong academic programs, safe and supportive learning environments, meaningful career and technical education opportunities, and a continued focus on literacy as the foundation for all learning. We want students to leave IWCS with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and character needed to pursue their goals and make a positive impact on the world around them.

Dr. Christopher N. Coleman, Superintendent
Isle of Wight County Schools
Dr. Christopher N. Coleman became Superintendent of Isle of Wight County Schools on July 1, 2026, after serving the division for eight years as Deputy Superintendent of Operations. Throughout his tenure with IWCS, he has provided strategic leadership for the division's operational and support services while helping shape many of the initiatives and facilities that benefit students and staff today.
As Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Coleman oversaw transportation, maintenance, custodial services, school nutrition, student services, school safety, nursing, capital improvement projects, and long-range planning. He worked closely with school and county leaders to ensure that the division's resources, facilities, and operations supported the educational mission of Isle of Wight County Schools.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Coleman managed the construction and implementation of seven state-of-the-art Career and Technical Education classrooms, creating expanded opportunities for students to develop workforce-ready skills. He oversaw the construction of the new Hardy Elementary School and led several major facility improvement projects, including the replacement of tracks, tennis courts, and football fields at both Smithfield and Windsor High Schools. He also coordinated the renovation of a portion of the former Hardy Elementary School into the division's School Administrative Offices, providing a modern, collaborative workspace for central office staff.
Before joining Isle of Wight County Schools in 2018, Dr. Coleman served as a high school principal and assistant principal, building a strong foundation in instructional leadership, school improvement, and student achievement. His career in public education spans more than two decades and includes experience in school leadership, strategic planning, operations, budget development, human resources, facilities management, and community engagement.
Dr. Coleman earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Liberty University. He also holds an Educational Specialist degree in Supervision and Administration from Liberty University, a Master of Education in Supervision and Administration from Grand Canyon University, and a Bachelor of Science in Business with an emphasis in Marketing from Chowan University. He holds a Virginia Division Superintendent License.
In addition to his career in education, Dr. Coleman proudly served for 22 years in the United States Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of Major. His military service reflects the leadership, discipline, and commitment to service that continue to guide his work in public education.
As Superintendent, Dr. Coleman is committed to building on the division's tradition of excellence by fostering strong relationships with students, families, employees, and the community. He believes every decision should be guided by what is best for students and is dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to a safe, supportive learning environment and opportunities to succeed.
