SHS Students Create Mural for Sentara St. Luke's Outpatient Campus

This is Isle of Wight County Schools’ first project for the nationwide America250 project, highlighting the importance local history has played in the founding of our country.  The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission is partnering with America250 to design the largest and most inclusive anniversary observance in our nation’s history. The mural in the community room of Sentara St. Luke’s outpatient campus is Isle of Wight County Schools’ (IWCS) first project for America250; highlighting the significance local history played in the founding of our country. It was created by more than 60 Smithfield High School art and history students and will bring vibrance to a community room which is open for free to any local nonprofits who wish to gather. An unveiling was held on May 21, 2024 to celebrate the finished mural and more than 15 students from Smithfield High School attended. They were joined by Sentara Obici Hospital’s president, principal of Smithfield High School, f IWCS Director of Secondary Education, and the President of the Isle of Wight County Historical Society.
