IWCS Launches VA 250 Podcast Project: "Revolutionary Roots"

Isle of Wight County Schools (IWCS) is proud to announce the launch of the VA 250 Podcast Project, a dynamic, student-led initiative created in commemoration of Virginia’s 250th anniversary. This cross-curricular project aims to honor and explore the county’s rich historical legacy while using modern tools and methods to connect past and present.

The project’s central inquiry, "How did agriculture, livestock, and major conflicts shape the founding of Isle of Wight County, and how do we see these influences today?served as the guiding theme for student research and creative production. Using primary and secondary sources, students investigated local history through the lenses of agriculture, education, indigenous relations, and the Revolutionary War.

The initiative officially began in May 2024, with instructional staff collaborating to identify key research locations. By September, students were introduced to the concept of producing a podcast that blended historical research and creative writing. Field trips to local landmarks, such as the Isle of Wight County Museum, St. Luke’s Historic Church and Museum, and the 1750 Isle of Wight Courthouse, provided immersive experiences and access to valuable historical materials. Partnerships with local historical societies further enriched the research process.  Teachers from both high schools played a central role in bringing this project to lifeZachary Kempf, History Teacher, and Samantha Lewis, Creative Writing Teacher, both from Smithfield High SchoolHeather Byrum Howell, History Teacher from Windsor High School, rounded out the trio of teachers.

Equipped with library recording tools and their completed research, students drafted podcast scripts, which were then edited by creative writing classes. In addition to scripting and recording podcast episodes, students composed original poems and short stories inspired by their historical findings.  The project culminated in the creation of a dedicated website titled "Revolutionary Roots", where all podcast segments and creative writing pieces are available to the public. This student-designed platform serves as both an educational resource and a tribute to the county’s enduring legacy. To explore the VA 250 Podcast Project and listen to student work, visit: https://sites.google.com/iwcs.k12.va.us/revolutionary-roots?usp=sharing.  On April 25, 2025, students participated in a panel discussion at the Isle of Wight County Museum on April 25, 2025, where they responded to questions about the project and provided reflection on their work and learning.

The VA 250 initiative commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, leading up to 2026. Across Virginia, communities are engaging in educational projects and public events to reflect on the people, events, and ideas that shaped both the Commonwealth and the nation. The VA 250 Podcast Project is one of Isle of Wight County Schools’ contributions to this statewide commemoration.
