Isle of Wight County Schools (IWCS) proudly announces Sherry Garris, art teacher at Carrsville Elementary School, as the division’s first-ever Rookie Teacher of the Year. This new recognition program celebrates the outstanding contributions of new educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching and a deep commitment to student success.
The Rookie Teacher of the Year program is open to educators with three years or less of experience in a traditional classroom setting who are active members of the IWCS New Teacher Cohort. Honorees are evaluated based on their ability to engage and support all students, create effective classroom learning environments, plan standards-aligned and inclusive instruction, and pursue continuous professional growth.
Mrs. Garris has exemplified each of these qualities and more. Known for her creativity, compassion, and unwavering belief in her students, she has transformed the halls of Carrsville Elementary into a vibrant gallery of student expression. Her art lessons are thoughtfully planned and deeply engaging, designed to build both skills and confidence.
“Mrs. Garris has brought ART back to Carrsville,” said Principal Tara Outland. “Her passion is evident in every piece of student work displayed around the school and in the community. She finds the artist in every child, and in doing so, boosts student morale and reduces classroom challenges. Her dedication, flexibility, and team spirit make her an invaluable part of our school family.”
In addition to her dynamic teaching, Mrs. Garris participates in school and community events, collaborates regularly with classroom teachers, and engages fully in professional learning opportunities. She was also the recipient of the April PAWSOME Award, nominated by her peers for her positivity and professionalism.
Reflecting on her achievement, Mrs. Garris shared, "I am truly honored to be the first recipient of this award and am proud to represent the new teachers in this way. I am equally as honored to share my love of art with kids each day and help them find their visual expression."
IWCS congratulates Mrs. Garris on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to seeing how she continues to inspire students and colleagues alike.
