IWCS Announces 2026 Rookie Teacher of the Year

Isle of Wight County Schools (IWCS) proudly announces Gabrielle "Gabby" Parker, a seventh grade English teacher at Smithfield Middle School, as the division’s Rookie Teacher of the Year. The recognition program celebrates the outstanding contributions of new educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching and a deep commitment to student success. The Rookie Teacher of the Year program is open to educators with three years or less of experience in a traditional classroom setting who are active members of the IWCS New Teacher Cohort. Honorees are evaluated based on their ability to engage and support all students, create effective classroom learning environments, plan standards-aligned and inclusive instruction, and pursue continuous professional growth.

Ms. Parker has exemplified each of these qualities and more. Known for her strong instructional practice, collaborative spirit, and student-centered approach, she has created a classroom environment where students feel both supported and challenged. Her classroom is structured, engaging, and built on meaningful relationships, allowing students to take academic risks and grow with confidence. “Ms. Parker stands out as the most exceptional first-year teacher I have observed,” said Principal Dr. Chelsea Kulp. “Her classroom reflects the very best of what a learning environment should be. She builds strong, meaningful relationships with students both in and out of the classroom, creating a culture of trust, engagement, and belonging. Whether through her instruction, mentorship, or leadership of student programs, she consistently goes above and beyond to support and inspire our students. Her impact in such a short time has been remarkable.”

In a special moment during the surprise announcement, Ms. Parker was joined by her parents, Tonya and Tracey Parker, along with division administrators and colleagues from Smithfield Middle School. A graduate of Smithfield High School, where her father serves as head football coach, Ms. Parker represents the strength of the Isle of Wight community and the impact of educators who return to serve the schools that shaped them. She is also a proud graduate of Norfolk State University.

Parker stated, "“I am incredibly honored to be named the Isle of Wight County Schools Rookie Teacher of the Year. Teaching was never my backup plan; it has always been my first choice. I owe this recognition to my wonderful parents, my supportive family, the Norfolk State University School of Education, the incredible staff at Smithfield Middle School, and most importantly, my amazing seventh-grade students, who have made this first year one I will never forget. They have touched my heart in more ways than one, and I would not be the educator I am today without their help in finding my way. Being their teacher has truly been the greatest honor."

IWCS congratulates Ms. Parker on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to the continued impact she will make on students and the school community.
