SMITHFIELD, Va. — Smithfield High School is proud to announce the reestablishment of its chapter of the nationally recognized Tri-M® Music Honor Society, with 35 students inducted during a ceremony held September 22, 2026.

Originally established at Smithfield High School in 1999, the Tri-M chapter is beginning a new chapter of its history by recognizing students who demonstrate excellence not only in music and academics, but also in leadership, character, cooperation, and service.

Tri-M Music Honor Society is a national program that recognizes high school students for their musical and academic achievements while providing opportunities to develop leadership skills and serve their schools and communities.

To qualify for membership at Smithfield High School, students must have completed at least one semester of high school Band or Chorus with a grade of A, be currently enrolled in Band or Chorus, maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 in other academic classes, and demonstrate strong leadership, character, and cooperation through school and community activities.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our students to grow as musicians and leaders while giving back to our school and community,” said Katie West, Smithfield High School Choral Director and Tri-M advisor. “We are incredibly proud of this group of students and look forward to seeing the impact they will make throughout the school year.”

The chapter will also provide students with an opportunity to earn recognition for their service. “Programs like Tri-M provide our students with opportunities to lead, serve, and use their talents to make a difference,” said Dr. Christopher Coleman, Superintendent of Isle of Wight County Schools. “We are proud to recognize these students for their accomplishments and look forward to seeing how they continue to grow as musicians, leaders, and members of our school community.”
