Military Kids
April is the Month of the Military Child and an opportunity to highlight some of our military families throughout IWCS. Being a military child is a unique experience that creates a common bond among children who have family members in the armed forces. Hear from a few of our students and staff on what it means to be a military kid and advice they have for others in their shoes. We appreciate our military families and are glad they are part of the Isle of Wight community.

IWCS School Counselors Support the Well-being of All Students
In recent years, Virginia has recognized the importance of mental health resources in our schools. To provide better access to those resources, lawmakers have implemented guidelines that require additional school counselors at all levels across the Commonwealth. Isle of Wight County Schools has increased the number of counselors throughout the division, which has proved invaluable to our students, teachers and parents, even more so since the pandemic.

A Helping Hand in the Clinic
The division added clinic assistants in the fall of 2021 after schools fully reopened on a traditional five-day schedule. With children returning to the classroom this year, clinic visits have ballooned. The position performs a range of activities including notifying parents when their child is sick, managing data for absences, and helping with contact tracing. Our clinic assistants are:

Using GPS Technology in Construction of the New Hardy Elementary School
Site-work is underway for construction of the new Hardy Elementary School. M. B. Kahn Construction Company and Heartland Construction will complete the first phase of grading in record time by replacing the traditional process of surveying and staking with GPS technology. The GPS system provides specific information to the equipment operator on how much they will need to cut or fill in relation to their position on the field. The process will save hundreds of man-hours while also reducing fuel costs. As part of the site preparation, crews are creating a retention pond, which, along with silt fences, will help control run-off from the property. The companies expect to begin laying the foundation for the school around February 15, as long as the weather cooperates. The new, two-story facility will be over 100,000 square feet and house students in grades Pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. The project is slated for completion in the spring of 2023.
